custom made resin eyes by mangakasan custom made resin eyes by mangakasan
last weekend i finally had the courage to try making eyes with resin, iv'e been doing research forever on how to make these but couldn't find really help full tutorials, loads of tuts about fur-suit eyes tho but none actually about casting in layers (those were mainly about casting blanks and painting them later after they are cured, but none about doll/sculpture eye making....AT ALL!

so i just had to figure it out myself, made some self made silicone molds for the eyes, on the photos above you see my 3rd batch, batch 1 was a complete FAIL XD batch 2 half a fail but still fail and batch 3 came out pretty decent but is very experimental, but i'm quite pleased how they came out, some are still meh...others are yay XD

but i really wanna make more and practice even more techniques in coloring them, all of them are multi layered and took a long time to make as with each layer it needs to cure for half a day....some have 4 layers so you do the math....

i'm planning to make a tutorial on how to make these as i made a lot of in progress photos on this batch :D (if anyone is interested tho....)

oh and on both pictures its the same batch just in different order just to show their effect in normal daylight and in flash light as some of them are reflecting :)

All eyes cast in resin, colored the resin with various media like acrylic paints, glitter dust and pearl ex pigments, polished in transparent nail polish

there are no clear tutorials yet that illustrate perfectly how to make miniature eyes, i read some articles here and there and ost i found out myself by experimenting myself, when i have time i will try to make a tut myself of how to cast/paint them

Thanks. I never mentioned it before, but I really like your sculpy sculptures. I like traditional clay myself, but it is a little expensive for me right now. I have thought about trying sculpy, and the resin eyes look so good with it.

its the acrylic paint i guess and those that really reflect a lot were made with pearl ex pigments, its all in the materials you use ;)

Thank you :) Do you have to mix the pigment with the acrylic paint or is it a paint itself?

you can do that but you dont have to, what i did here is either mix acrylic paint or pearl ex with the transparent resin and poor it layer by layer in the mold, most of these have 3 or 4 layers of colored resin

sweet but how do you get the pupils then? Does that affect the normal drying time? Thank you for the advise

i am planning to make a tut soon, but heres what i do, 1st layer is just transparent layer (it becomes the lens ) then i mix resin with black acrylic paint and when the first layer has dried i put a small drop of the black ontop of it with a toothpick, once thats dry i color the resin in any other kind of color for the iris layer, and usually as last layer i mix white acrylic paint with resin and put that ontop the last layer. it doesnt affect the drying time as to each layer has to dray nearly a whole day... resin just needs a very long time to harden
