custom made resin eyes by mangakasan custom made resin eyes by mangakasan
last weekend i finally had the courage to try making eyes with resin, iv'e been doing research forever on how to make these but couldn't find really help full tutorials, loads of tuts about fur-suit eyes tho but none actually about casting in layers (those were mainly about casting blanks and painting them later after they are cured, but none about doll/sculpture eye making....AT ALL!

so i just had to figure it out myself, made some self made silicone molds for the eyes, on the photos above you see my 3rd batch, batch 1 was a complete FAIL XD batch 2 half a fail but still fail and batch 3 came out pretty decent but is very experimental, but i'm quite pleased how they came out, some are still meh...others are yay XD

but i really wanna make more and practice even more techniques in coloring them, all of them are multi layered and took a long time to make as with each layer it needs to cure for half a day....some have 4 layers so you do the math....

i'm planning to make a tutorial on how to make these as i made a lot of in progress photos on this batch :D (if anyone is interested tho....)

oh and on both pictures its the same batch just in different order just to show their effect in normal daylight and in flash light as some of them are reflecting :)

All eyes cast in resin, colored the resin with various media like acrylic paints, glitter dust and pearl ex pigments, polished in transparent nail polish

Hey there.
Are you still planning to make a tutorial how to make eyes?
My darling and I just started sculpting and since we're in Germany we can't find most supplies without buying every stuff from America, which makes it so frigging expensive...
Do you have any tips on how to do them? I loved this magic gloss stuff people are using on youtube for their doll eyes, but it cost like 30€ on amazon for a tiny bottle. (And buying it on the american amazon is mostly only possible as and ad on item. :I )
We want to try Fimo Liquid/Gel.

Do you have any advices?
(And I wasn't sure if you're able to talk german. I thought to remember it but oh well... Old brain and stuff.)

i have never used anything else apart from clear resin, as this medium can withstand oven temperatures so i never dabbled with gels for eyes. i buy my clear resin from the brand easy cast, but i am sure there are plenty of other brands that make this stuff, try looking at german online art shops, there must be a place where they sell it, i buy mine from a dutch online shop so if we can get it in our tiny country you shouldn't have much problem finding it, (i hardly buy from the US because of those terrible import duty taxes) i mainly buy from ebay europe (most of the time from UK sellers as they have a lot and are cheaper then dutch retailers) or from dutch web shops. Another thing you can try (but might be tricky to find in the desired sizes) are glass domes, these can withstand heat just as well and you don't have to get trough the trouble of casting and mold making :) Goodluck!

I would love to see that tutorial if you're still thinking about writing it! I make felted dolls but so far all of them are faceless, since I hate all the eyes I find in stores and haven't been able to make them myself yet.
